Historic Cultural Monument Nomination For The Chateau Alto Nido
The Office of Historic Resources has deemed Hollywood Heritage’s nomination of the 1930 Chateau Alto Nido ("High Nest") multi-family dwelling as worthy of consideration for Historic Cultural Monument designation.
Phase One: Introduce the building at the Cultural Heritage Commission Meeting on Sept. 17 at 10 AM.
About Alto Nido: The four- and five-story apartment building with a subterranean garage is located on a hilltop at the southwest corner of Ivar and Franklin Avenues in Hollywood. Constructed in 1929 - 30 before the 101 freeway, it was designed by architect Stanley J. Pedersen (1899-1971) in the Spanish Colonial Revival architectural style for singer and real estate developer Henry J. Hedin. To fans of SUNSET BOULEVARD, this iconic building was home to struggling screenwriter Joe Gillis before his encounter with Norma Desmond. This building is in Council District 13 (Hugo Soto-Martinez).

Findings: Hollywood Heritage has deemed the Chateau Alto Nido as an excellent example of a 1930s apartment house in Hollywood exhibiting the distinctive features of the property type, and as an excellent example of Spanish Colonial Revival multi-family residential architecture in Hollywood.
