Participants learned how to use OC or pepper spray (a 2.5 oz bottle is legal in LA), for situations when this might be the best course of action. However, the emphasis was also on staying alert, tips to avoid becoming a target, how to minimize distractions while traversing LA and the need to prioritize de-escalation.

Wildfire Preparedness
We are now in wildfire season. Information shared at recent FireSafe fairs was extremely valuable. You can find highlights and additional resources on our HHA blog.
LAFD recommends installing fire mesh in rooftop and ground-level vents a simple, cost-effective way to protect your home from wind-driven embers.
Another excellent resource: the Los Angeles Regional Fire Safe Council, whose website and podcast cover everything from emergency kits to the role of native plants in fire-prone zones like Hollywoodland.
Also present at recent events was the Theodore Payne Foundation, with deep expertise in fire-wise landscaping and community action. Visit their site for more tips and event listings.

Wildfire Awareness and Preparedness Days in the Hollywood Hills
Wildfire preparedness, and awareness of the risk we live with here in the Hollywood Hills, is a top priority for us all. After the tragic fires in our city in January, there is renewed energy for education and information sharing. This month, two days have been set aside for public engagement in our area. The first was on Saturday 7 June. The second is on Saturday 22 June at the Autry Museum. This poster has information about attending. These days aim to be informative and community focused and we hope you find the time to attend.
Memorial Day in Hollywoodland
We were delighted at the number of community members who made our coffee & donuts get-together on the Village Green a success! It’s been a while since the HHA organized an event to bring neighbors together socially and to share information about the work we’re doing. Most of our board were on hand to answer questions and former HHA president Chris O'Brien was at the real estate office to show us around the exhibition she and Greg Williams created about Hollywoodland houses that turned 100 this year. Our thanks to Heather Mata, our Senior Lead Officer at LAPD, and the Hollywood Orchard team for joining us.

The Sherman Library and Gardens meets Hollywoodland!

In 2022 I began collecting acorns scattered on the Hollywoodland roadways while on my daily walks. These were gathered with the purpose of creating a visual, living legacy to celebrate Hollywoodland’s Centennial in 2023.
I started with 100 acorns. That horticultural process was mostly trial and error. Some of the acorns sprouted, some did not, some were meals for hungry squirrels. The survivors grew in pots in our garden, a mini Hollywoodland forest.
A Win for the Hillsides: Affirming the Power of our Hollywoodland Specific Plan
The Los Angeles City Council’s decision to deny the proposed development at 3003 Runyon Canyon Road marks an important victory for hillside preservation—and a powerful affirmation of the value of Specific Plans in Los Angeles.
The appeals, led by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, MRCA, and the Hillside Federation, successfully invoked the protections of the Mulholland Scenic Parkway Specific Plan (MSP), halting an oversized ridgeline residence that threatened the character of Runyon Canyon Park. This ruling sends a clear message: our city’s planning protections matter—and they must be upheld.
For Hollywoodland, this decision reinforces the enduring strength of our own Hollywoodland Specific Plan, adopted in 1987. Designed to preserve our neighborhood’s distinctive scale, topography, and natural setting, the plan remains our best defense against inappropriate development. Like the MSP, it ensures that new construction is compatible with the hillside environment, our historic fabric, and public safety.

A social start for our new 2025 HHA Board
This week, members of the newly elected Hollywoodland Homeowners Association Board for 2025 met up for a social gathering at the Aster in Hollywood. Thank you to resident Michael Halloran for hosting us in this versatile and friendly club so close to our homes. Following our annual meeting in February, it was fantastic to meet up and get to know each other before we formally start work on March 11, our first meeting of this term.

Thank you to all who attended the HHA’s annual meeting on February 18, 2025 and thanks also to the Beachwood Café for offering us their space to host this event. We also welcomed members participating via zoom.

Crime and Safety: taking action
On January 20, 2025, Hollywoodland resident Justin Burnett hosted a community meeting on crime and safety at Besant Lodge. Thank you to all who attended and watched online. The aim of this meeting was to come together to learn and remind ourselves what we can do to address the challenges we face, following the mobilisation of many residents via the Hollywoodland Neighborhood App.
