L.A.’s New Speed Cameras Go Live October 26

Drivers may soon have another reason to watch the speedometer.

The Los Angeles Department of Transportation is rolling out 125 automated Speed Safety Systems throughout the city, with the first cameras scheduled to begin operating October 26. The five-year pilot program, authorized by California’s AB 645, is intended to reduce excessive speeding on streets with histories of serious crashes and in areas near schools, senior centers and other vulnerable road users. The cameras will record the rear license plate of vehicles traveling at least 11 miles per hour over the posted speed limit. LADOT emphasizes that the program is designed to change driving behavior rather than surprise motorists: camera locations are being publicly posted, “Photo Enforced” signs will be installed, and every new camera location begins with a 60-day warning period. Hollywoodland itself is not on the current camera list, but several locations are nearby. In Council District 4, systems are planned along Western Avenue between Franklin Avenue and Los Feliz Boulevard, Highland Avenue between Franklin Place and Camrose Drive, Hollywood Boulevard between Camino Palmero and Vista Street and Franklin Avenue between Tamarind and Cheremoya Avenue. Once the warning period ends, civil penalties range from $50 to $500, depending on speed. The citations do not place points on a driver’s record. LADOT says the systems photograph license plates rather than drivers and that the program includes statutory privacy and data-retention restrictions. LA Department of Transportation

The City says the objective is simple: get drivers to slow down before another crash occurs. LADOT reports that roughly one in five fatal Los Angeles crashes in 2024 was directly attributed to speeding. LA Department of Transportation
