Monthly HHA Membership Update
October Update
Dear HHA Members,
It’s fall already, and many of us are enjoying the promise of cooler days. This month, we’d like to share a few important updates with you.
State Bill 79
Despite significant efforts to influence a veto, State Bill 79 was signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom and will take effect July 1, 2026.
The bill allows for the development of more mid-rise apartment buildings (potentially up to nine stories) and streamlines approvals for projects that meet affordability and labor standards near major rail and rapid bus stops.
It overrides some local zoning restrictions to encourage increased housing availability and density in transit-rich areas.
While we don’t anticipate changes to Hollywoodland in the short or medium term, this bill establishes a new baseline for development, and we’ll be keeping a close watch on how it evolves.
Emergency Action for Hillside Communities
HHA members were invited to join a safety meeting held by the Lake Hollywood Homeowners Association (LHAA) on Saturday, October 4.
Thank you to everyone who participated! Collaborating across Hillside Communities is an essential next step in ensuring our issues receive greater attention at the City level.

If you live in or own a home built in 1926, Chris O’Brien—who has been curating historical information and exhibits about Hollywoodland since 2023—invites you to share your property’s story.

Advocating for Our Community
A major focus remains California Senate Bill (SB) 79.
This bill, authored by Senator Scott Wiener, has passed both the California Senate and Assembly and is now heading to Governor Gavin Newsom’s desk for signature or veto by October 12, 2025.
We are deeply grateful to the team advocating for amendments that protect Hollywoodland’s single-family zoning against pressures to increase density near transit hubs.
How you can help:
Write in to add your voice, or contact us to add your name to letters HHA will be sending to Governor Newsom by the end of September.
