Lake Hollywood Estates Emergency Action Meeting
On Saturday October 4th, Lake Hollywood Estates Homeowners' Association (LHHA) hosted an Emergency Action Meeting for their members, extending the invitation to Hollywoodland. We are joining forces to address the significant risks and concerns we have as Hillside communities, and turn to action.
The priority for this work is to achieve significant improvements in areas including evacuation and fire safety, traffic and road safety, emergency access and public space protection.
The meeting's goal was to inform and hear from residents. There are many areas where the City of LA, and our Council District 4, are not upholding their responsibilities, despite constant engagement with them from both LHHA and HHA. In addition to information, a decision will need to be made by members to potentially pursue legal action. The meeting outlined the steps required and implications of doing so. LHHA has already put the city on notice.
While there is a lot we can all do as local residents to harden our homes and act responsibly in a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone that is also a thoroughfare for tourism, there is an urgent need for government and civic leadership to address the public safety crisis we face daily. It stems from systemic non-enforcement and governance failures, implicating a range of legal mandates at the municipal, state and even federal guidelines levels, as outlined on the website City at Risk.
Guest speaker Michael Eveloff led the discussion, as LHHA's legal rights advisor.
HHA Directors are actively engaged in this planning and we will keep our members informed of progress. We are grateful to LHHA for their invitation on Saturday.
The urgency of this work is also reinforced by the recent publication of an independent report and after action review of the January fires, available here.
