City Takes a Harder Look at License-Plate Surveillance

Los Angeles is taking another look at how automatic license-plate reader technology should be used—and what safeguards should be in place before a new system is deployed.

On October 20, the Los Angeles City Council’s Public Safety Committee voted to recommend a veto of LAPD’s proposed Axon automatic license-plate reader pilot program. The action follows the City Council’s earlier October 6 vote to assert jurisdiction over the proposal and pause its implementation while Council members examined it more closely.
